Cerro Kennedy is a mountainous formation located in the expansive Sierra Nevada mountain range of Santa Marta. With an altitude of 3,100 meters above sea level, the views from Cerro Kennedy are nothing short of spectacular. Blanketed in fog and home to hundreds of endemic, common and migratory birds, this is a nature lovers’ paradise.

On this 2-day hiking adventure, you will get to experience the local culture and take in breathtaking views of the snow-capped Bolívar and Colon peaks (the two highest peaks in Colombia), the city of Santa Marta, the inlets of Tayrona National Natural Park, and the entire mountain system that makes up the Sierra Nevada. If you’re passionate about nature and looking for an authentic cultural experience, this is a must-do activity during your time in Santa Marta.

Trekking to Cerro Kennedy is done by private trails, through local farms and villages, and away from the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourist attractions. It’s a unique opportunity to disconnect from city life and reconnect with nature.

ITINERARY 

Meeting point: Accomadation

Departure time:  7:30 a.m.

Arrival time:  6:00 p.m

Day 1: The adventure begins with a pickup at your accommodation. From there, we’ll head to the picturesque town of Minca, hidden between the Sierra Nevada and the sea.

Once in Minca, we’ll visit a traditional coffee farm to learn about the world-renowned Sierra Nevada coffee process. Afterwards, we’ll go to the next stop, Finca La María, another farm located in La Tagua village. 

Each point goes a little further into the Sierra Nevada where you can see its wonderful and surprising green landscapes. After visiting the farm, we’ll go on a 2-hour hike to the Finca Santa Elena. Here we will rest, have a welcome snack, eat a traditional Colombian lunch and take a tour of the beautiful surroundings. After taking in the spectacular views of the sunset over the mountains, the Ciénaga Grande and the Caribbean, we will have dinner and rest for the evening.

Day 2: Your second day starts with sunrise over the Sierra Nevada and enjoying a delicious cup of local coffee and traditional breakfast. Afterwards, we will start the approximately 3-hour hike to Cerro Kennedy, with excellent views of the snow-capped peaks of Bolívar and Colón along the way. With this hike being on private trails, it’s a unique opportunity to soak in the peaceful, natural surroundings and observe the variety of endemic birds that inhabit this region.

After reaching Cerro Kennedy and enjoying the view, we’ll take the 3-hour hike back to Finca Santa Elena to have lunch, rest and continue with the adventure back by road to Santa Marta.
