Sierra Nevada Santa Marta

The hydrographic star of Magdalena

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a hydrographic star and a monumental tourist destination. Here the majesty of nature and indigenous wisdom intertwine. The spectacular natural landscape is home to lagoons, rivers, snow-capped mountains and four groups of indigenous peoples that inhabit and protect the mountain: Kogui, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kakuamo. Each step inside the Sierra is an encounter with one of the most beautiful and unique places on the planet.

It is located in the north of Colombia, between the departments of Magdalena, La Guajira and Cesar. Just 42 km from the beaches you will find the snow-capped Colón and Bolívar peaks, with 5,775 and 5,560 meters above sea level, which make the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta the highest coastal mountain in the world. This imposing mountain has all the thermal floors, from hot and dry to perpetual snow. From these snow-capped peaks, lagoons and rivers are born at 3,000 meters above sea level.

Activities you can do

Sierra Nevada: Patrimonio de la humanidad

This coastal range was declared a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. Thanks to the variety of ecosystems, enchanting beauty and significant presence of indigenous communities, it has great natural, historical and cultural wealth. It is also one of the most irreplaceable sites in the world for threatened species (according to a study published in the prestigious journal Science).

To experience this natural and cultural treasure, visit one of the departments of Magdalena, La Guajira and Cesar. From there, you can book camping and/or climbing trips that require extensive hikes through hard-to-reach wooded areas. If you decide to go one one of these challenging adventures, remember that you must be accompanied by a guide, have experience in mountainous terrain, bring the appropriate equipment and be in good physical condition.

Along with their sacred beauty, the mountains also provide a precious commodity. Water that flows to the aqueducts of all the surrounding settlements comes from the Sierra Nevada. The awe-inspiring scenery and dense tropical forests attract visitors from around the world. It is a unique place to reconnect with nature in a mystical way.

Additional Recommendations

The Lost City, Colombia

You cannot forage or buy food on these tours, you have to bring kitchen equipment and food. Grains, vegetables, fruits, salt, panela, granola and foods with high protein and caloric content are recommended. Here are other important considerations before visiting this wonderful place: vaccinate against tetanus and yellow fever, and do not forget a first aid kit. You must always have a guide and bring high mountain equipment. We recommend a hammock, sleeping bag or blankets, long-sleeved shirts and thick pants.

There are times when the Lost City is closed to visitors, so it is advisable to consult the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and the Ministry of the Environment before visiting.

Everything that the Sierra Nevada houses makes it a unique place to visit. Come and meet her! This mystical site will envelop you in its majestic landscapes of tropical forests and invaluable historical and cultural content.
