If you are coming to Santa Marta you should visit this place: El Parque de Los Novios. Even when the name of the site means “Couple’s park” or “Lovers’ park” like if we were talking about a place for romance, it is a space for everyone, if you are coming alone, with friends, or with relatives. This point of the city has a special ambiance, above all because of the offer around the park.
It wasn’t a park a long time ago, it was a small pond created by a branch of a river that crosses the city, after being dried, it became a square used as a public market in the XIX century.
After moving the market, people started to call it “Placita Vieja del Mercado” (Old small market square) and finally “Placita Vieja” (Old Square), but as it was not enough all the names the square had got until then, it would be called “Parque Santander”, in honor of one of the heroes of the country. Nonetheless, since the park was visited frequently by couples some decades ago, everybody started calling it Lovers’ Park “Parque de los novios”, the name we all know today.
The park is not large, in it, you can find a bust of the politician Manuel Murillo Toro, and a monument to Francisco de Paula Santander, a national hero. Further to the center, there is a small pavilion. In the surroundings, there are some buildings of republican style, that predominated in the early twentieth century.
It is very visited by locals and tourists, one of the reasons is its good location. It is located in the Historic Center of Santa Marta, one block from the bay, in front of the Palace of Justice, and surrounded by buildings with historical value. It is 20 minutes from El Rodadero or Taganga, both well-known tourist destinations. So, it is not so far from other points of the city you could stay in Santa Marta.
Here you will find many plans. There are restaurants, discos, cafes, and a variety of bars. You can go to a special place to eat something and can end up partying. But, as we said above, Lovers’ park is just the way it is called, no matter if you’re single, you will find something to do here, since this is the heart of the nightlife in Santa Marta downtown.
